Author Xposure

I was honored enough to be recognized by The Notebook as Author of the Month. Here's my interview, or shenanigans I probably shouldn't be saying out loud...

1. What made you decide to start writing fanfic?
Reading Fanfiction for an entire year inspired me to finally write. I was sitting in bed one day, thinking, ‘I can do this. I can create a mind-blowing story like Stephenie Meyer did.’
So I wrote my first story, We Are All Made of Glue.
And I failed miserably.
I look back now and wonder why I decided to try for number two. But I’m like the little engine that could, I kept going and going. Failure is only what you make of it. Success did not lie in my number of reviews; it revealed my willingness to try to step out of my element.

2. Which of your stories was your favorite to write?
I’m proud of the success of Pilfered, but my favorite is How to Fix a Pretty Boy. It’s led to wonderful opportunities, allowed me to meet amazing people, and gave me the confidence I needed to pursue writing. It was only supposed to be a one-shot, but the response was so overwhelming, that I continued. That story let out the side of me that most don’t get to experience. I’m glad I let go and wrote what felt right to me.

 3. Who is your favorite character that you've written? Why?
My favorite character to write is definitely Esme Cullen from Pilfered. A lot of people hated her, because she was so evil and conniving. What they failed to see what the heartache and anguish behind her actions. She definitely resembled the inner thoughts I had, lurking beneath a surface of fake smiles. I revealed aspects of myself, and through her, it was a sense of relief. I could finally lay my fears out on the line.
Esme is the person, not who I wished to be, but the person I wish I could overcome.

4. Who is your least favorite character that you’ve written? Why?
I don’t have any least favorite characters. I write them all in my stories, not to fulfill a need to use SM’s personas, but because I want them in my story. Too many writers try to make sure they stick with what SM created. That’s fine. But I would rather approach a box, and say “Hey, it’s me, Xquisite. Nice to meet you, but I think I’m fine standing over here.”
James doesn’t always need to be the bad guy, and Alice isn’t always a shopaholic. It’s all about having an edge. So, ALL of my characters, I adore, because I wrote them carefully, with a plan in mind. Does it always work out? No. But at the end of the day, the characters are mine. And that is what matters.

5. Do people in your RL know about your writing fanfic?
I’m laughing out loud right now. The answer to that is HELL NO! Besides my husband and my brother, who refuse to read my smut, no one knows. It’s not because I’m not proud of what I’ve written, it’s just that I revert back to a little girl around my family.
“Yes, Daddy. I wrote a story about my characters having a foursome…”
That wouldn’t go over too well.

6. What is your greatest achievement so far?
My greatest achievement is hitting the complete button when I am finished updating a last chapter. I sit back and think, ‘I did it!’ I made it through the tears, the heartache, the writer’s block, the flaming reviews, and the negative responses. I’m able to then laugh, realize a spicy pizza is the source of my heartburn, turn on the television to relax, curse out any flamers, and re-read positive reviews. That is what pushes me. My readers ARE my achievement. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.

7. Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
My inspiration, believe it or not, comes from myself. I take memories of my past, and insert myself into my characters. This is the reason my stories are not for the light hearted. They vary from being EXTREMELY sexy, to EXTREMELY dark, to EXTREMELY funny. I’m inspired from the reflection in the mirror.
Is that vain? Probably.
But if you truly know me, then you know I don’t give a fuck.

8. Do you outline your stories before writing them, or do you plot them out as they go?
I don’t have an outline, per se. I have Post-It notes plastered all over my laptop. They are scratched through, torn-up, and splattered across my screen. With Pilfered, I had to have a semi-outline. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to keep up. With something like my one-shot, I write on the fly. Sometimes it’s best to just let the story flow, and allow the characters speak to you. A rigid plan turns into a rigid story.

9. What are 5 things you want your fans to know about you?
Number one, my love for my faith and my husband drive me to get up every day. Family is everything. Love is boundless.
Number two, I stuff people up my vagina. It’s my way of telling people that I love them. I like to keep them nearby. And let’s face it; I’m obsessed with my own va-jay-jay.
Number three, with the exception of Nutella, I loathe chocolate.
Number four, before I write, I have to have a cigarette in one hand, and a cup of coffee in my left. My heart does the typing.
Number five, I’m a smart ass. You either love me or hate me.

10. Who are some of your favorite fanfic authors?
I suppose I can’t get away with answering ‘Everyone.’ Sigh…okay, ummm, WhatsMyNomDePlume, Stella Luna Sky, EdwardsBloodType…but that’s all I’m saying. Most of my friends write awesome stories, so feel free to check out my profile for their names. I hate leaving people out.

11. What are some of your favorite fics?
Emancipation Proclamation, of course, but I’ll Be Your Lover Too was an obsession. The Boy in the Red Sweater kept me awake for days. The Office put me in a Fanfiction Asylum. I enjoy stories that vary. I’ll read smut (only because I’m a whore), but any plot that takes me away from the norm, I’ll love.

12. What was the first fic you ever read?
My first was Loner. I was hooked. I inserted that needle in and let it filter through my veins. I kept thinking, ‘What the hell? Who would do this to SM’s beloved characters? How come Edward isn’t sparkling in the sun? And why didn’t I think of it first?’
But I thought it was genius. Pure genius.
 13. How did you get into fanfic?
Honestly, the credit goes to Google. I was web surfing (at work) trying to get an Edward Fix when Fanfiction popped up. And I thank them for taking my life away. Damn you Google, damn you.
Side note: I guess the technology people found out I was visiting the website, because I can no longer access it at my job. This is what happens when you’re an addict. Intervention comes when you least expect it.

14. What story owns your ass right now?
I just finished reading Written In The Stars. I am INFATUATED with this story. It’s like Avatar gone horribly wrong. At first, I screamed ‘There is no fucking way I am reading Sci-Fi!’ But I relented and I’m so glad I did. Edward’s cock being as big as Bella’s waist drew me in. I refuse to read anything else. It’s so different. That is what Fanfiction is all about. Straddling on the edge of norm, and jumping even when everyone else is pulling you back.

 15. What color socks are you wearing?
Blue striped fluffy socks. They are comfy. They are mine. Although…they can be yours too, for the low low price of $2.99.

16. How did BSG come about?
Blue Shirt Girl is my crazy, irrational side. Xquisite is my timid quiet side. BSG came to me one day while writing my Pretty Boy story. I needed for my characters to have an inner monologue, and she popped in my head and never left. She’s brazen, unapologetic, and absolutely nuts. For that, I love her. I tend to say rude comments and then blame it on her. Therefore, people know not to judge me. I think BSG is reflected in everyone, even if they are unwilling to admit it.
But I adore her, nonetheless.

17. Why did the chicken cross the road?
To get to the carrots, of course. No one can resist carrots.

18. How do you find a needle in a haystack?
When you stop looking for rainbows and pots of gold, you look for what hurts. Needles hurt. They are painful, and penetrate your very being. I’m not telling you to pierce your skin until you’re in excruciating agony. But when you reach your hand into that haystack, do it one time. Touch the surface of the ground. Allow the needle to prick your finger, and relish the throbbing that it brings.
That haystack will die, wither into useless pieces of straw. But that needle? It will forever change your existence. You’ll always have the scar that proves your strength. Sometimes the best things in life come from pain. Hurts like a bitch, but you’ll come out stronger than you ever thought possible.
But then again, if your name is Rumplestiltskin and you got a shitload of straw, fuck all of the above advice. I obviously have no idea what I’m talking about.

19. Other than Edward, who is your favorite Cullen? Why?
Probably Emmett. His dimples draw me in and I’m a bit enthralled by him. Most readers visualize him as this loveable, teddy bear type of character, but I see him as being tough and resilient. That, and I want to have shecks with him on a daily basis. Along with the hubs. I’m sure he won’t mind.

20. If you were Bella, how would you handle Edward’s leaving in New Moon?
Will you find me in a chair bawling for several months? Emailing people that don’t even have the courtesy to write me back? Lurking outside of my ex’s empty house? Hell no! You get your ass up, sleep around, drink some beer, and watch MTV.
Either that or go searching for his ass. James isn’t the only motherfucker that can track. I got a GPS system that is the shit.
